BALLARD SMITH. Born, Sept. 20, 1849, Cannelton, Ind. Son of Hamilton Smith. Fitted at Notre Dame university. Upon graduation Mr. Smith became reporter for the Louisville Commercial under Col. R.M. Kelly, and rose to the post of city editor. He was then asked by Col. Watterson to join the staff of the Courier Journal in the same capacity. He soon became managing editor of the latter. In 1876 Mr. Smith went to New York to become city editor of the World, and afterwards joined the staff of the Sun as managing editor. He remained there two years. At the request of James Gordon Bennett he then went to the Herald. Soon after the purchase of the World by Joseph Pulitzer, Ballard Smith became its managing editor. Later he was London correspondent for this paper, and so continued until failing health compelled him to give up work and return to this country.
Died, July 31, 1900, Waverly, Mass., of paresis.
Married, Catherine, daughter of Frederick Butterfield, New York City. The ceremony occurred in London, the bride being given away by Minister Lincoln. One child.

Obit: John McCallister, 55, RR 1, Cannelton, died sometime between 12:45am and 6:40 am, Thursday. He was confined in the county jail and was found by Sheriff Robert Elder.
He is survived by three sisters, Mrs Stella Huff, RR 1, Tell City; Mrs. Rachael Poehlein, RR 1, Cannelton; and Mrs Almada Hess, RR 1, Cannelton; two brothers, Charles, RR 1, Tell City, and  Lester, RR 1, Tell City. funeral was held at the Chestnut Grove Cemetery at the place of burial Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm. The body was at the Huber Funeral Home.
