Joseph Goffinett

The 24 June 1922 Cannelton Enquirer, page 8 contains the following obituary:
“Death of Joseph Goffinett
Mr. Joseph Goffinet, one of the pioneer settlers of this part of the county, died at the home of his youngest daughter Mrs. Wm. V. Devillez at 2:15A.M. Sunday June 18, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 18 days.
Mr. Goffinet who has been living in Florence, Wisconsin for the last twenty years arrived in Tell City about five weeks ago, tho’ being in declining health he made this long journey alone, with the intention of visiting his children and expecting the change of climate to assist him in regaining health, which he had been loosing for almost two years.
He leaves three sons Jerome of Tell City, Louis of Enfield, Ill., and John of Florence, Wisconsin, three daughters Mrs. J.B. Goffinet of Tell City, Mrs. Dr. Bryant of Cisne, Ill., and Mrs. Wm V. Devillez of Leopold, also a second wife he married in Wisconsin, after his first wife died in Illinois, to morn his departure.
Funeral services were held by Rev. W.V. Boland, burial at St. Augustine at Leopold last Monday.”

Jost Fischer

Last Sunday at 10:30 in the morning Jost Fischer, also well known outside the city, died at the age of 75 as a result of a cold. He was born in Canton Lucerne, Switzerland, came to America at the beginning of the 50s and here soon after Tell City’s founding. After he had worked in various positions for several years, he ran a travern in his home on 8th street and at the beginning of the 80s became a fellow-owner of the Fischer and Hartman Chair Co. The deceased had earlier been elected several times to the city council and functioned twice as its chairman. Due to his upright nature and his righteousness he stood in high esteem with his fellow citizens and his family loses in him a caring husband and father. He leaves his wife, a son and a daughter, as well as several grandchildren. His burial took place Tuesday morning from the Catholic church to St. Mary’s cemetery.

Mr. John Speakers, an old citizen of Cannelton, was killed on Thursday last by the fall of slate while drawing pillars from the bank known as Newcomb’s bank.
