Lafayette

The Cannelton Telephone August 20, 1937

Lafayette Spring was dedicated on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1916 with appropriate ceremonies. Mrs. Lee Rodman, president of the Woman’s Travel Club made the opening remarks, thanking J. C. Shallcross of the American Cannel Coal Company, for the privilege of improving the spot. Improvements consisted of building a stone wall around the Spring and making stone steps between the two stone ledges and piping water some twenty feet to a pump which rests on a large trough. J Mrs. Rodman stated that the Travel Club wanted to mark one historic spot in Indiana and she thought that Lafayette Spring was chosen by them. Mrs. Rodman introduced Dr. Logan Esarey of Indiana University and a former Perry Countian, who made an address. Dr. Esarey of course explained the historical association of Lafayette Spring saying that Gen. Marquis de Lafayette , was shipwrecked here on the night of May 9, 1825, when his steamer sank, during a storm.
