Burned Out Three Times by Incendiary
Cannelton, Ind. July 20 – An incendiary on Friday morning burned a large stock barn on the farm of Sheriff Luke Kellems, 15 miles back of Cannelton and two and one-half miles from Derby, destroying the barn and three head of horses. The incendiary in order to make good his escape, cut the telephone wires. Bloodhounds are being brought in from Rockport in the hope of running down the guilty party. This is the third time Mr. Kellems has been burned out.

Lafayette Taylor kills Son in shooting

Lafayette Thylor, once a prosperous farmer of Anderson Township, shot and killed his son, Bryan Taylor, at a dance hall in <a title=”Apalona, Indiana” href=”https://www.southernindianaconnections.com/townships-towns/oil-township-2/apalona-indiana/”>Apalona</a> in Oil Township, 25 miles north of Cannelton in the hall operated by Henry Flamion around 10:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 7 , 1931. Bryan, deputy sheriff for the dance, attempted to put his father and others off the floor to keep order. Lafe Tqylor whipped out a revolver and fired, the bullet hitting Bryan near the left corner of his mouth, then traveling to the base of the brain. He died within a few minutes. Lafe Taylor left on foot for his home near Sparrow school, a distance of around 12 miles. He was arrested around 3:00A.M. at Sulphur Creek Bridge by Sheriff Anton A. Voges and Deputies Rube Hobbs and Victor Gelarden and jailed at Cannelton. Bad feeling had existed between the father and son for several months. In one fight Bryan had broken two or three ribs of his father and nearly tore off one ear. On December 7, 7931, after hearing 23 witnesses, a Grand Jury, led by Prosecutor James L. Houston, indicted William Lafayette Taylor on the charge of murdering his son, William Bryan Taylor, with a revolver. The Cannelton Telephone reported on I January 1932 that the Lafe Taylor case was venued to Spencer County. On Friday February 5,1932 at Rockport he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 2-21 years in prison. William Lafayette Taylor (October 1862 – 1949) was a son of Thomas J, and Margaret Rhodes Taylor. On May 6, 1888 he marred Elizabeth Krieg (January 1870 – 1969), daughter of George and Barbara Krieg. They were parents of eight known children, the fourth of whom was William Bryan (b. April 12, 1895). He served in WWI with 9 months in France. He married Frances McAdams (May 12, 1894 – April 15, 1958), daughter of George and Matilda Spencer McAdams. They were parents of five children: 1.) Evelyn A. (July 2I,1922, North Dakota) on August 4,1951 married John H. Evrard (April 8,1914, Anderson T*p.), son of John W. and Rosa Hilgenhold Evrard. 2.) Robert (February 7, 1924 – December 19, 1974). 3.) Ralph Jennings (June 23,1926, Bandon, Ind.) on June 26, 1948 married Frieda Mae LeMaire (February 15, 1927,Apalona, Ind.), daughter of Frank and Thelma LaGrange LeMaire. The Tell City High School Gym and Arena was named after their younger son, Bryan F. Taylor (January 8,1957 – December 13,1977).He was an outstanding athlete in Tell City High School and at Evansville College (University of Evansville). He was a member of the ill- fated basketball team which was killed in the plane crash just after take-off. Their elder son, Grant, named his son Bryan F. Taylor. 4.) Ruth Ann (December 30, 1927, Bandon, Ind.) on February 3, 1948 married Carroll LaGrange (November 21, 1923, Apalona), son of Levi and Florence Doogs LaGrange. 5.) Charles Donald (August 17, 1930, Tell City) on October 18, 1953 married Dorothy Jocelyn Howe (October 21, l93l). Daughter of Clarence and Anna Risse Howe. William Bryan Taylor was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Tell City on Wednesday, November 10, 1931.
