WAGONS OF THIS KIND LOADED WITH CHAIRS were familiar sites on Tell City’s streets in years gone by. The chairs were made in the factories by the men and then were hauled to homes where the women and children plaited the cane seats and backs in them. This is a picture of Jake Poehlein with his team and loaded choir wagon. Gust Hess of Thirteenth street, Tell City, also drove one of these chair wagons for years.

A popular price for plaiting these chairs for some years was a dollar a dozen. The driver usually had silver dollars to pay for the plaiting when he picked up the chairs. The story goes that this was used in order to keep the wind (when it was blowing) from blowing the paper money away in case of a slip when the driver handed it to the lady of the house from up in his high wagon. Many a Tell Citian was educated with “chair plaiting money.”
