During the civil War the “William Covey family migrated to Perry Co., IN  This river  Co.,  was bounded on the north and east by Crawford Co., south by the Ohio river and west by Spencer Co.,. The land was mostly rough and hilly, but a part was fertile and even. The 1870 census list “William” as a farmer, Nancy and five chldren in a household in anderson Township. the township they lived in was named for the river, or creek, whose wanderings watered its entire extent and ran into the Ohio river. Irregularities of surface existed–high rocky hills intersected by deep valleys. In 1875, these observations were made about the Co., :”This  Co.,  was named in honor of the gallant Commodore Oliver Perry. With the exception of about twenty thousand acres of bottom land, and some tracts of beech lands at the heads of the streams, the balance of the  Co.,  is very hilly. On the bottoms and a portion of the hill-sides and tops, the soil is rich, but much of the largest part of the  Co.,  is what is usually denominated poor land, thouthere is but a small part of it which may not, with careful farming, be made productive. The timber is of an excellent quality; the best of oak and poplar are found on the hills, and in the bottoms sugar, beech, ash and walnut. The surplus articles exported are corn, hay, pork, etc. The trade is wood and coal for the Ohio river steamboats is large and profitable.”
