Tell City & River Boats

Most Important Port

Because we were one of the Iasi cities between Evansville and Louisville to receive rail service Tell City became and for mans years held the position of the most important river port between these two centers. For the river as a whole the “Packet Era” was at its peak at about the time.

THE TELL CITY WHARFBOAT WITH THE “T ARASCON” tied up to it was a familiar scene at the Tell City levee in the early days. You’ll find the wharfboat mentioned in the history in this supplement as well as the river story written by Bert Fenn. Did you notice the chair wagons on the levee? One has just unloaded its load of double cane seat chairs and another waits to move in to the wharfboat gang plank.

THIS EARLY TELL CITY PHOTO gives a good view of the levee here river boats landed at the foot of Blum street in Tell City. This was taken from the river’s edge and shows the road up the levee and the Moraweck hotel in the center background. This is the site that greeted early Tell Citions and visitors to Tell City since most of them arrived by boat.
