Notes for DANIEL CHRISTOPHER HAYS, JR.:

His father was 48 when he was born.  Daniel’s father died before he was 13 years old, his older brothers Jacob and Edward enlisted in 1861. He was very much on his own by the 16th year. He was married before he was nineteen. They moved about a great deal. They lived in Harrison County and later in Kentucky, returning to Perry County around 1890.

Daniel C. Hays was a farmer who enjoyed trading horses. In their old age he and Rachel were poor. They had helped their children and now most of them had families of their own and were not able to return much of the favor. They had kept Leora, Golda and Oscar after the death of Sarah and Leroy.

About 1880 the Daniel C. Hays family came to a farm in the part of Perry County called Dixon Valley. This is about two miles from the Mt. Sinai Christian Church, beyond where Elva Beard now lives. He grew to manhood in this neighborhood. His schooling ended with the second grade, but he continued learning all his life.

This was during a period of mobility for the Daniel C. Hays family.

From Harrison County, they moved to Kentucky, then back to Perry County.

One story from this period has to do with shoes. When George was a boy, shoes were made by a cobbler. He put people on a waiting list. He lived with each family until all the family shoes were made. The Hays family being new in the community were at the bottom of the list. It was about Christmas before the children got shoes.

The children would wait until the frost melted, then run all the way to school. By the time the shoes were finished, their feet were so cracked and sore that they were very uncomfortable. These heavy cowhide shoes were so stiff that they were hard to break in. Several days these shoes were worn to school, then taken off and set by the wall to let the skin cracks heal. A poor child got only one pair of shoes each winter. When these wore out the child went barefoot.
